What non-classical, stringed instrument is most closely related to the cello?

I was wondering what stringed instrument (that isn't classical- i.e. double bass, viola, violin, and cello) is most closely related to the cello. I seemed to think that it was an electric bass, but the people I was talking to said that it was a guitar. Does anyone have any incite? I really want to know.
